SCIENCE FICTION
AS MYTHOLOGY

One of the best contemporary incarnations of mythology is the science fiction film — at least the good ones. Science fiction typically addresses itself to the essential questions regarding humanity. Protagonists often are required to define what it is to be human in the face of alien, technological, and dehumanizing forces. Comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell approved of what George Lucas was intentionally doing with myth in the Star Wars series.
